The East Lancashire Railway has announced that their resident steam locomotive, 34092 City of Wells, has been loaned a new tender.

The Southern Railways-built locomotive has not run for a few weeks due to it's tender developing a fault. This has left services in the hands of 80097, 60009 ‘Union of South Africa' and even 32 ‘Gothenburg' (hauling a 10 coach train with 37109 last week!)

To get the locomotive back on track, the railway has secured the tender from 34067 ‘Tangmere', a mainline certified locomotive that is undergoing overhaul work.

The loan of the tender is thanks to West Coast Railways, who are based at Carnforth Steamtown.

34092 should now be out on passenger services soon!

  • Very Positive Move – Because it would keep 34092 Running longer with an extra range water Tank with the Tender!

  • Good to see common sense and conviviality prevailing! Reassuring that two great locomotives can benefit mutually – I heartily applaud this exchange!

  • This is a great move as with Tangmere being out of action as she has been now for 3 years.

West Coast will benefit with the hire fees in hiring the tender of Tangmere to City of Wells. Which 34067’s tender is a longer merchant navy wheel base one which has more water capacity compared to 34092’s own tender.
