The Office of Rail and Road has announced that they have authorised TransPennine Express to bring their Class 802s into service.

The ORR has contacted Hitachi Rail Limited to approve their application to bring Class 802/2s into service.

This will see 802201 – 802219 into passenger service in the North West and Eastern Scotland.

The conditions of the authorisation are that Automatic Selective Door Opening, or ASDO, should be proven over TPE routes before they enter service. ETCS equipment should also be fitted and functioning.

TPE 802s has been authorised to operate at 125 mph on TPE routes.

This now means that three train operating companies have 802 authorised for service, this being London North Eastern Railway, Great Western Railway, and now .

802s, or Nova 1s, will operate between Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

The Nova 1s will be maintained by Hitachi in Doncaster and Edinburgh. They have electronic seat reservation systems, power sockets, storage for 4 bikes, and five toilets on board. They can also operate on diesel or electric power.

  • Travelling at 125mph to Euston last Monday we noticed an 8-mile tailback on the southbound M! motorway; I was glad to be progressing my journey on an electrically-powered outmoded train rather than stuck on a carbon-laden motorway. Happy, too, that we passed through Nuneaton at speed…….

  • The Class 802 IETs that Transpennine Express have ordered are to replace the Class 185 Desiro DMU units which means that the Class 185 could be cascaded to the Republic of Ireland.

  • I think it’s great that the potential for mass transit in great comfort far removed from the Victoria era is being made available for people, it shows we are progressive and not stuck in the morning car commute. Wish we had more east/west lines north of London.

  • This is a joke, unproven technology with a late running programme to be operated by a failed TOC. It’s time we stopped this out pouring of money on our Victorian Railway Network and start to invest in public transport that will benefit the many rather than the few who use along with its great cost to the taxpayer. Railways are an outmoded method of transport and are doing very little to help reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and the alternative technology is current unavailable/no proven. It’s time we consign this mode of transport to history.

  • About time that TransPennine Express should start introducing the Class 802 “Nova 1” IETs in service. Whilst TPE “Nova 2” Class 397 Civity EMU trains should also begin service and to replace the Class 350/4 to West Midlands Trains. As “Nova 3” Class 68+Mk5A have entered service earlier this year.
