Repairs have begun on a retaining wall which collapsed onto the railway at Liverpool Lime Street station causing major disruption two years ago.
Two hundred tonnes of debris fell onto the railway back in February 2017 when the wall was overloaded with concrete and temporary buildings on land next to the railway owned by Liverpool City Council.
Overhead electric lines, track and essential railway equipment were damaged.
It forced the station to close with no trains able to run in or out of Lime Street for a week.
A temporary repair was made to quickly get the station open again in 2017, but now final structural repairs are underway.
Network Rail is due to complete the wall repairs by autumn 2019, without any disruption to trains or passengers.
The land next to the railway is being redeveloped by Liverpool City Council into a new energy centre.
What did the officials say?
Tony Duncan, Network Rail project manager, said:
“I'm pleased our team are able to complete the final repairs to the retaining wall above Lime Street tunnels.
“The collapse of the wall two years ago halted trains in and out of the station for several days and caused severe damage to our tracks and equipment.
“I'd like to thank Liverpool City Council for working with us to help complete this vital work.”
