May has been another productive month for The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Ltd in overhauling their LNER A4 No.60007 “Sir Nigel Gresley”.
Valve Gearing, Blastpipe and Electrics
Parts of the fillet curve on the crankpin have seen repair work start, with the strap for the centre connecting rod now ready for inspections by subcontracts, following initial tests carried out at York.
Good progress is being made on fitting the correct bolts for the slide bars.
Recently brought out of storage, the blastpipe casting is starting to be disassembled and cleaned.
The GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway) equipment has been stripped from its locker, allowing work to begin on overhauling the locker. Work also continues on fitting the remote charging system.
Tender
A supporting beam is now fitted near the front of the tender’s tank to keep the side plates in place when work starts on separating the front from the rest of the tank.
Once removed, the full extent to repairs can be seen. At the opposite end, filler and paint have been applied to completed repairs.
The top hanger’s bushes and pins fit perfectly, with attention now focusing on fitting tender brakeshaft’s end brackets and bushes. Some of the spring hangers have been sent away for repairs. Bearing brass for the axleboxes is the process of scraped to the required size.
Profile plates are being made to reduce the time spent on scraping. Reaming of the horn stays is completed, they now await new bolts. The new position for the end brackets has been marked out and the bushes are being machined now. Steps at the rear of the frame have been repaired and fitted.
