Steam locomotive 60009 Union of South Africa to take part in ELR’s 1940’s Weekend

The East Lancashire Railway has announced that LNER A4 No.60009 “Union of South Africa” will visit the preserved line this weekend to star in their 1940s Weekend.

1940s Weekend

Taking place between Saturday 25th and Monday 27th of May, the 1940s Weekend allows visitors to step back in time to the 1940s and see how people lived back then.

Many activities will be taking place over the three days, from Spitfire flybys to live music and dancing.

A brief history of 60009 ‘Union of South Africa'

60009 Union of South Africa is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive. It was built in 1937 at Doncaster Works. The ‘A4' was a common sight on the East Coast Mainline between London and Scotland. 60009 is one of six surviving A4s.
