Steam locomotive 60009 Union of South Africa hauls trains this weekend

The East Lancashire Railway has announced that 60009 Union of South Africa will be hauling passenger trains this weekend.

Union of South Africa will be hauling train services between Heywood and Rawtenstall, via Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Caravan Park, Summerseat, Ramsbottom and Irwell Vale.

60009 joins D832 ‘Onslaught' (which celebrates 40 years in preservation this Saturday) and BR Standard 4 No.80097.

A brief history of 60009 ‘Union of South Africa'

60009 Union of South Africa is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive. It was built in 1937 at Doncaster Works. The ‘A4' was a common sight on the East Coast Mainline between London and Scotland. 60009 is one of six surviving A4s.
