Steam locomotive 60009 Union of South Africa will be back in steam on the mainline and will be passing through Manchester and Keighley on Friday 19th April 2019.

The A4 locomotive is on a light engine movement. 60009 is moving from the East Lancashire Railway, in Bury, to the National Railway Museum, in York.

The movement on the national network is to allow the steam locomotive to be in York ready for its role as the locomotive for an upcoming railtour from York to Edinburgh.

The steam locomotive will pass Manchester Victoria at approximately 09:57, before heading off to Preston (at 09:17) via Wigan North Western (10:43) and the West Coast Mainline.

From Preston, the Union of South Africa will take the West Coast Mainline to Carnforth via Lancaster (11:39).

After a break and refuelling at Carnforth, the locomotive will then make its journey through Lancashire and Yorkshire via Bentham (12:30), Long Preston (12:56), Hellifield (12:58), Keighley (13:43), Shipley (13:57), outer Leeds, Church Fenton (16:01), where it will then steam through York before arriving at the National Railway Museum (16:45).
