Work is progressing on the overhaul of 60007 “Sir Nigel Gresley” by The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Ltd at the National Railway Museum York.

Bottom-End

The last cylinder relief valve is being overhauled, with the crankpin caps almost machined to size.

Pipework connecting the mechanical lubricator to the atomisers has been laid. With the smokebox not in the frame currently, a temporary bracket has been made so the pipes can be cut to the right length.

The task now is to fix the pipes into place. Worn out parts of the AWS battery box have been repaired or sent away for work.

The centre crankpin is nearing the end of repair work. Machining work on the lower slidebar shims is complete. The coupling rod bushes have been ordered.

Tender

Starting from the top, the last section of steel plate needing replacement has been cut out, with undercoat paint being applied to areas ready. The handrails are in the process of being reassembled, the current knobs will be reused but new rails will be needed.

Work has progressed on the brake hangers, which is nearing completion. The frame itself has seen holes drilled for attaching hangers and its been measured. The measurements will be used in fitting the correct bearings for the axleboxes. Work has finished on the rear coupling hook, which now is fixed in place.

Boiler

The boiler has been filled with water to check for any leaks. If none are found, it will be prepared for its hydraulic test that will hopefully take place this month. The safety valves have received new springs with further inspections being made to the valve guides.
