Northern has announced details of cancellations to train services on Sunday 21st April 2019 in the North West.
Northern have chosen the train services to minimise the impact on passengers.
The routes that are most affected are Liverpool, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
Please do make sure you check before travelling this weekend
Planned cancellations are as follows:
- Manchester Piccadilly – Stoke
- All train services have been cancelled
- Rail replacement bus services will operate between Stockport and Stoke
- Lancaster – Morecambe
- All train services have been cancelled
- An hourly replacement bus will operate between Lancaster and Morecambe
- Preston – Hellifield
- Two round trips have been cancelled
- A bus replacement service will be provided from Preston
- Lancaster – Preston
- All train services have been cancelled
- Passengers are advised to use other train operators
- Manchester Oxford Road – Blackpool North
- All train services have been cancelled
- An hourly bus replacement service will run between Bolton and Preston
- Salford Central – Wigan North Western
- All train services have been cancelled
- An hourly bus replacement service will operate between Bolton and Wigan
- Manchester Airport – Liverpool South Parkway
- All train services have been cancelled
- Passengers should use the Northern service between Manchester and Hunts Cross, and then Merseyrail to Liverpool South Parkway

Andrew Gwilt, no, it’s not “fine”. For months, Northern has been making widespread cancellations on Sundays in its north-west region, where Sunday work is voluntary (different conditions apply in Yorkshire) and drivers have been declaring themselves unavailable for work. For example, on World Cup Final day 2018, around 170 Northern trains were cancelled.
Blackpool North had two trains an hour on Easter Sunday. The normal Sunday service is four an hour. This is not about engineering works, but about Northern’s Sunday working arrangements for train crews. The solution is of course to include Sundays in the working week but this will require additional staff and an agreement with the Unions. Who will meet the cost of the additional drivers? DfT probably isn’t that much interested in Sunday travel and an agreement between Northern and the unions may be difficult in view the state of their industrial relations.
Brilliant, families want to go to Blackpool on a glorious Easter weekend, so some moron in charge at Network Rail or Northern decides to close the line and put replacement buses. How to lose passengers to car and coach in one easy lesson.
Bunch of bloody idiots in charge now, bring back Regional Railways under BR.
Suits me I’m an ex driver for Northern but now working in a ticket office on drivers wage. The less I do the happier I am. Laughing at the company, I even get paid for being off sick which I make the most of.
At least it’s just for 1 day then it’s fine. Not continuous strikes that happened last year & earlier this year. And previous years where Northern caused so many delays and misery to passengers across the North of England.
