As part of Northern's service changes during the May timetable change; the train operator is set to introduce a new service from Leeds to Chester – via Manchester Victoria.
The new hourly service will link the two cities for the first time in many years.
As well as the links between Chester and Leeds, Northern will introduce enhanced links between Hull and Scarborough, Newcastle and Carlisle, as well as a weekday service between Sheffield and Gainsborough.
The May 2019 changes will not only provide greater connections but is also designed to build on the reliability and stability introduced during the December 2018 changes.
Other improvements to Northern's timetable include:
New hourly services between:
- Chester and Leeds (via Manchester Victoria),
- Sheffield and Gainsborough (including weekday services to Gainsborough Central)
Hourly services between:
- Blackpool North and Manchester Airport (via Manchester Piccadilly),
- Blackpool North and Hazel Grove (via Manchester Piccadilly),
- Preston and Manchester Victoria,
- Hull and Scarborough
Other improvements include:
- A half hourly service between Newcastle and Carlisle (via the Tyne Valley),
- Three trains per hour between Leeds and Harrogate (two stopping services and one semi-fast),
- Improved journey times between Lincoln and Leeds

Chris Jackson, Northern's Regional Director said:

”Whether it's a trip to the races, an encounter with wildlife at Chester Zoo, a visit to the royal Armouries, or an away day at Elland Road, our new service will get you there.
”We are absolutely committed to providing the best possible rail service for our customers, and our new timetables will see the introduction of new routes and strengthened links elsewhere in the region. We are working hard to provide a more reliable and punctual service, and will deliver more that £600m of investment; including 101 new trains, featuring air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and at seat power sockets. By the end of 2019, we will retire our Pacer trains, and have completed more than £40m worth of improvements at our stations; introducing better lighting, seating, security, and new ticket vending machines.”

I really do hope these new (and latest) timetable changes …. are a fresh improvement to last year’s most catastrophically time-wasting and passenger train delaying timetables of 2018.
Let’s hope these help make up for last year’s confusion and delay of one passenger service after another, whom occurred mostly across our beloved North of England.
Not only Northern to introduce the new Chester-Leeds service via Manchester Victoria. But will Northern introduce their new trains when the new May 2019 timetable is introduced and to start replacing the existing rolling stocks that Northern are replacing. Including keep some of the existing trains to be used on other routes.
When’s the extra hourly Northern York to Scarborough via Malton service starting??? Thus making the route, a half hourly service between Transpennie Express & Northern. Which is long overdue
