Northern has announced that it is set to give Gainsborough Central it's first-weekday rail service in almost 30 years.
The new service will come as part of Northern's May 2019 timetable change. Gainsborough Central will see an hourly service to and from Sheffield, providing the station's first-weekday service since it was suspended in 1993.
Northern already operates a service from Leeds to Lincoln Central via Gainsborough Lea Road, however, this change will mean that there will now be two trains per hour from Gainsborough to Sheffield.
As well as the new link from Gainsborough to Sheffield, Northern are also set to enhance links between Hull and Scarborough, Newcastle and Carlisle, as well as introduce the first direct rail service from Leeds to Chester (via Manchester Victoria) for many years.
Northern claim the May 2019 enhancements will not only add new journey opportunities, but also build on the reliability and stability introduced during the December 2018 timetable change.
Other improvements to Northern's timetable include:
New hourly services between:
- Chester and Leeds (via Manchester Victoria),
- Sheffield and Gainsborough (including weekday services to Gainsborough Central)
Hourly services between:
- Blackpool North and Manchester Airport (via Manchester Piccadilly),
- Blackpool North and Hazel Grove (via Manchester Piccadilly),
- Preston and Manchester Victoria,
- Hull and Scarborough
Other improvements include:
- A half hourly service between Newcastle and Carlisle (via the Tyne Valley),
- Three trains per hour between Leeds and Harrogate (two stopping services and one semi-fast),
- Improved journey times between Lincoln and Leeds

Northern Regional Director, Steve Hopkinson, said
“We're delighted to be able to bring weekday services back to Gainsborough Central, giving people in North Lincolnshire the improved rail links they have been demanding for so long.
”The new service provides excellent links between the town and all stops to Sheffield, opening up new commuting, business, and leisure opportunities. It also means that the existing Leeds to Lincoln service will be faster as it will stop at fewer stations.
”We are absolutely committed to providing the best possible rail service for our customers, and our new timetable will see the introduction of new routes, and strengthened links elsewhere in the region. We are working hard to provide a more reliable and punctual service, and will deliver more than £600m of investment; including 101 new trains featuring air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and at seat power sockets. By the end of 2019 we will also retire our Pacer trains, and will have completed more than £40m of improvements at our stations; introducing better lighting, seating, security, and new ticket vending machines”

I think Gainsborough was missed out. But now Northern will introduce their new service to & from Gainsborough to Hull, Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly, Blackpool North and perhaps Gainsborough to Leeds, York, Lincoln and Nottingham. Which is a brilliant idea. Bravo Northern.
And perhaps Gainsborough to Sheffield aswell.
