WATCH: 35018 British India Line in The East Midlands on a Memorial Tour

Sunday 17th March 2019 saw 35018 British India Line was out on a special memorial tour from Kings Lynn to Melton Mowbray and back.  

The tour she hauled was a memorial tour for the founder and ex-managing director of The Railway Touring Company who sadly passed away in October 2018.  

35018 British India Line hauled the tour on the throughout, from Kings Lynn, Norfolk to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and return.

On her journey, she went through places such as March, Peterborough, Grantham, Bottesford, Bingham, Nottingham, East Midlands Parkway, Loughborough, Oakham, Stamford & Ely.

This tour was a rare tour with it being rare seeing a Merchant Navy in the East Midlands.

Sunday 17th March saw RailView 35018 at Elton and Orston, Nottinghamshire (Nottinghamshire's most least used station) passing through 7 minutes late at 12:51. Lag Lane, just outside Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire passing through at 15:20 no report & Wyfordby Level Crossing, just outside Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire passing through at 15:21 no report

  • Designed by Oliver Bullied
  • Built by the SR in 1945 at Eastleigh Works
  • Rebuilt by BR in 1956 at Eastleigh Works
  • She was withdrawn from BR in 1964
  • Purchased by Woodham Brothers Scrapyard for scrap in 1964 
  • Purchased by Richard Heather & John Bunch for preservation in 1979
  • In 1980 she was moved to the Mid Hants Railway where very little restoration work would take place
  • In 2003 she was taken to South Coast Steam Limited, Portland, Dorset with very little restoration work taking place  
  • In 2012 she was purchased by David Smith and was moved to Carnforth Steamtown, Lancashire for full restoration to take place
  • She returned to service in 2017, facing many problems
  • She fully made a successful return in 2018
