The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Ltd have busy as usual at York overhauling their LNER A4, No.60007 “Sir Nigel Gresley”.
Tender
Reconstruction of the tender’s tank top is moving into the final stages. Majority of the unusable steel has been cut, with many new bits bolted, welded or riveted into place.
This includes the vestibule top arch side flanges which have recently been bolted into place, allowing the shaped top arch plate to be fixed in place when ready.
Between the frame has seen piping starting to return. A new layout has to be used, due to the new air brake piping using a new route.
Slowly but surely, the piping team are finding new positions for all the various pipes.
Work is underway in setting up the drawhook. It has been moved roughly in place while calculations are being made on where it needs to sit exactly. Following some minor adjustments to the Buckeye coupling’s body, the Buckeye coupling should now meet mainline gauging requirements.
Valve Gearing and Crossheads
Some new bolts for the slidebars will need to be made and fitted and thicknesses checked before they are finished completely. Initial inspection of the crossheads and valve guides has highlighted work is needed, with the valves guides appearing in good condition. Further examinations will bring to light the full extent of condition for the team.
Boiler
Once back in steam, 60007 will join Locomotive Service Ltd’s mainline fleet of steam engines, with a representative of the company paying a visit to see the boiler. They are happy with the work done to date.
Recently completed work on the boiler at Llangollen Railway has included expansion of the flues tubes and refurbishment of the dome sealing face. Current progress is focused on the belly door face. The grate and accompanying parts are being packaged up ready for shipping down to Llangollen for fitting to the boiler.
