WATCH: On board steam locomotive 45596 Bahamas’ first tour

Saturday 9th February 2019 saw LMS Jubilee No. 45596 Bahamas haul her first revenue earning railtour since 1994 from Oxenhope KWVR (Keighley & Worth Valley Railway) to Carlisle over the KWVR & S&C (Settle & Carlisle) via Keighley, Hellifield & Appleby.

This day saw the Jubilee head through places such as KWVR stations such as Oxenhope, Haworth, Oakworth, Ingrow West & Keighley & mainline stations such as Skipton, Hellifield, Settle, Ribblehead, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Carlisle.

Sadly at Keighley, the tour was delayed due to a fallen tree just outside of Keighley which affected most Northern service trains in the area for most of the day. However, luckily with Bahamas being steam, the tour had permission to pass it and with a clear route over the S&C Bahamas made up time, arriving into Carlisle on time after over 30 mins of delays.

With a successful an overall successful run, Bahamas certainly put on a fantastic performance. Bahamas now awaits to haul her 2nd tour from KWVR to Carlisle & back over the S&C on Saturday 16th February 2019 on Bahamas Railtour 2.

With West Coast Railways wanting their stock back at Carnforth that night, people getting off of the tour at Haworth & Oxenhope had to move from the tour to a steam service at Keighley hauled by LMS Black Five Locomotive No. 45212 from Keighley to Oxenhope.

RailView filmed Bahamas at stations such as Keighley & Carlisle, and passed through station on the tour such as Skipton, Hellifield, Long Preston, Settle, Ribblehead, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby & Armathwaite (on the return leg) 

Info about 45596 Bahamas:

  • Designed by Sir William Stanier
  • Built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1934
  • In 1961 Bahamas was modified to carry a double chimney to improve performance 
  • Withdrawn from BR in 1966
  • Purchased directly from BR for preservation by the Bahamas Locomotive Society in 1967 who is her current owners
  • Overhauled back to working condition at the Dinting Railway Museum
  • Returned to the mainline in the 1970s 
  • Taken off of the mainline in 1994 due to her mainline ticket expiring
  • She last ran in 1997 on the KWVR
  • For fifteen years she spent her time on display at Ingrow West & Oxenhope museums on the KWVR as well as at the National Railway Museum in York
  • In 2013 she moved to Tyseley Locomotive Works where her overhaul would take place for 5 years
  • She returned to steam in September 2018 also running at Tyseley's 50th Anniversary Open Weekend
  • In January 2019 she returned to the mainline for the first time since 1994
  • She is the only Jubilee with a double chimney in preservation
