The latest update from the society features a review of 2018’s progress and exciting news.

2018

The GSNLRS took many steps forward in the restoration of their Southern Railway “Merchant Navy” No.35011 “General Steam Navigation” in 2018.

The biggest achievement was gaining all the main components needed to restore the trailing truck.

The journey to reach this milestone has seen the axlebox cover fabricated, made from the society’s own pattern, and trailing truck spring beams made from a 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drawing the group had produced.

Both nameplates were sponsored and a few original parts have also been obtained, such as lamps and a speedometer. All of this progress wouldn’t be possible without donations from members and supporters of the project, which the society greatly appreciates.

Current Work and New Base

Machinist Ian has been busy working on the klinger valves. A lantern for the klinger valves has been produced from a stainless steel block, along with caps for the valves.

The biggest news at the moment for the society is they are in progress of finalising an agreement for a new home for 35011. There is still a chance an agreement won’t be met but if all goes well members will find out first via The Packet Issue 9, which will features other news and updates too.

This also means the location of the third Annual General Meeting (AGM) is yet to be confirmed. Despite this, the date set for the AGM is Saturday 18th of May 2019.
