The Midland Railway – Butterley has posted an update on the restoration of LMS 3F Tank No.47445.

About 47445

Built in 1929, 47445 spent most of its working life at Crewe hauling a variety of trains. Passing through a couple of owners after being brought from BR, 47445 was preserved in June 1970.

Now owned by the Derby City Museums and Art Gallery, the Midland Railway – Butterley currently have the engine on long-term and are restoring 47445 to full working order.

Update

The frame for the tank is at West Shed, where current work has been checking the alignment of the frame’s plates and taking measurements to machine the axleboxes to the correct size.

Work on the boiler is ongoing at the North Norfolk Railway.

  • I have some old engineering books I would like to find a good home for. I am happy to deliver them. They belonged to my dad who was an engineer and worked for a company that made locomotives and bespoke mining equipment. They are Newnes Complete Engineer and I presume he may of had them when he served his apprenticeship. I’m not sure when they were printed possible in 40’s or 50’s but no print date on volumes. They appear to cover every type of engine, maintenance of engines etc with diagrams and pictures. I thought they would be useful for anyone doing restoration of vehicles or locomotives. I thought they would be very useful to teach people how older engines operate and can be maintained. Could your organisation put them to good use or if not could you suggest an organisation which would appreciate them?
