LNWR Heritage has released an update on steam locomotive 46100 Royal Scot, which is currently undergoing winter maintenance.
46100 was moved back to Crewe on the 25th September 2018 after starring at the Severn Valley Railway Autumn Steam Gala.
Since then, the locomotive has been lifted off her wheels, which happened on the 11th October 2018, for re-tyring.
The tender tyres have been re-profiled – this is because there is plenty of life left in them yet. The bogie tyres have been re-tyred and are now awaiting profiling.
Unfortunately, the driving wheelsets are not as straight forward. The group have all of the new tyres in stock, but the trailing axle has shown up multiple faults. The team is now looking into ways of making the wheelset usable for the short term.
Some of the driving axle boxes will require re-metalling due to the white metal starting to break up.
The valve and cylinder boring are underway by the team working on 46100. New castings are in stock for replacement piston and valve heads.
The boiler is having a full retube, as is 45231 The Sherwood Forester, this is also progressing well.
The tender requires complete replacement of all horn blocks. This is because they have been found to be heavily cracked. Pattern work is currently underway with the casting due to take place later this month.
46100s tender axle box brasses also need replacement, castings are on site ready for this work to be undertaken as soon as possible.
As with 45231, LNWR Heritage are also focusing on 46100 and it is hoped that the loco will be available for traffic ready for the start of the 2019 operating season.
