LNWR Heritage has released a small update on the work being done to Black 5 No.45231 The Sherwood Forester.

Currently, the locomotive is in the middle of having air braking installed as a bolt-on device to existing vacuum braking system currently fitted to the locomotive.

The air system is to be the same design as 70000 Britannia, 46100 Royal Scot & 34046 Braunton. However the equipment will be located in different parts of the loco due to the design of the engine.

There is also work underway to upgrade the TPWS as well as the air brake interface with the onboard data recorder.

Turning attention to the boiler, 45231 is having a full re tube. This is now in the final stages with tube expanding and beading of the tubes about to commence.

are focusing heavily on 45231, with them aiming for the locomotive to be available for service from mid-February onwards.

  • British business always deals with situations on a short term basis when trying to cut costs. Then when it wants things reinstated it costs a whole lot more because costs have risen by a huge amount. I don’t understand why this country of ours that was once the envy of the world doesn’t learn from past mistakes. At present we have private companies running our railways with British taxpayers heavily subsidising them and they still have no idea how to run the railway system.
