The team working on ‘Can Pac’ have been busy working on several areas of the engine at the Mid Hants Railway.

Trailing Truck and Tender

Work now focuses on the trailing truck’s axleboxes. On examination, one axle box has a crack which needs to be repaired, followed by white-metalling.

The frame for the trailing truck has been painted, improving its appearance.

The team has continued on detaching the drag box from the tender’s frame, despite the harsh elements this time of year.

Boiler

Following a successful trial fitting in November, the plates for the inner firebox can now be erected on a jig and fixed together. This work is estimated to take six months.

Once completed, the next stage will to fit 2,200 stays.  Also, the boiler barrel has received a clean.

The superheater header will need to be shipped off for repairs to a crack found in the header.

Cab

The team has made a visit to the Gloucester and Warwickshire Steam Railway to see classmate 35006 “Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co.”.

This was to view the cab layout, in order to help reassemble 35005’s cab. Several photos have been taken to aid the fitting of various components. New glass has been installed in the rebuild cab shell.
