Most of the overhaul work on ‘Can Pac’ within the last month has been on the boiler, where the replacement of worn-out sections has progressed very well.
Boiler
Trial fitting of some new components for the inner firebox’s has been completed. The throat plate, tube plate and door plate all fitted well, which can allow the team to move onto the next stage in the repairs.
To help ensure the new sections were a perfect fit, the measurements for these parts was taken from the life-expired ones removed in 2016. This method has proved successful.
The next stage will see measurements taken for the new sides of the inner firebox. This will be followed by marking and drilling bolt holes between the foundation ring and throat plate plus door plate.
Once completed, removal of the foundation ring can take places to gain full access to the firebox. A jig will be used to build the new firebox.
‘Bottom-End’ and Tender
Work on this area of the engine is focused on both leading bogie and trailing truck, in order to have both reunited with the frame early next year. Recent work has involved white metalling the axleboxes for the bogie.
The new drawbar cushions have now been attached. This component was initially hard to source but has been supplied by Anti-Vibration Methods. The majority of the parts attached to tender’s frame have now been removed. This includes the rear buffer beam to enable access to the drag box.
It is brilliant to see progress on Can Pac, and we look forward to the future where she will be in steam.
