The Small Loco Group have announced that Hunslet Works No.1589 “Newstead” has moved to the Spa Valley Railway.

History of “Newstead”

Although thought to have been scrapped, “Newstead” was actually saved and almost fully restored by Malcolm Saul at his home. Malcolm sadly passed away in 2016, with his wife contacting the to find a new home for the tank.

The Small Loco Group, based at the NVR, have cared for the engine since arriving at the line in 2016. When examining the locomotive, they found “Newstead” to be in a good condition, which would make the task of returning the engine to steam easier.

Move to the

1589 has now arrived at the Spa Valley Railway, where the engine will be overhauled and join the line's home fleet of steam locomotives.
