The first two weeks of October have seen work continue on overhauling A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley by The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Ltd at the National Railway Museum, York.

Front-End

On the lubrication system, the new pipe clamps are being manufactured.

The atomisers have recently been brought out of storage to be worked on. So far they have been stripped ready for cleaning and repairs.

Pressure testing of the steam pipes connecting the superheater header and cylinders will be carried out soon. The pipe flanges have been lapped and lens rings have received a clean. Fitting of the front coupling hook has been completed.

Axleboxes

All six coupled axleboxes have been cleaned and now undergoing repairs. Construction of new locking screws for the thrusts has begun. Brackets, found under the axle boxes, have been trial fitted. Attached to the brackets is a pin which holds the mainspring in place. A new set of pins have been made, now ready to be fitted.

Tender

Repairs on Tender's Side Sheet // Credit NRM

Renewal to the steel plates across the tender has been carried out. This includes areas such as the left-hand side sheet and the internal bulkhead between the coal and water compartments. Measurements have been made for larger sections of steel plate that are in need of replacement. The bottom plate, found at the front of the tender, has had the rivets supporting it removed.

Needle-gunning has been completed on the frames, allowing work to focus on both drag boxes. Examinations and measurements are being made to determine which areas need repairs.

The wheelsets are currently being cleaned and painted. The tender's vacuum brake cylinders have been stripped of some parts which needed renewing. Replacement pipework for the air system is more resistant to damage than previous pipework.
