A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa steamed through Church Fenton this Saturday whilst hauling a special railtour to York.

In this wonderful photo, LNER A4 Pacific 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ is seen pacing by Little Fenton foot crossing.

This foot crossing can be located between Sherburn-in-Elmet and Church Fenton.

60009 can be seen leading the Railway touring company’s “The Yorkshireman” railtour from Ealing Broadway to York.

A colourful wreath can be seen visible on the front, which is a tribute in memory of the director of The Railway Touring Company who sadly passed away recently.

The locomotive would stay at York while the return trip will be diesel hauled. Taken on the 20th October 2018.

About 60009 Union of South Africa

60009 Union of South Africa is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive. It was built in 1937 at Doncaster Works. The ‘A4’ was a common sight on the East Coast Mainline between London and Scotland. 60009 is one of six surviving A4s. This will be the last time the locomotive visits the Bluebell Railway before she retires from service in 2019 and is placed in a museum alongside 61994 ‘The Great Marquess’ in Fife, Scotland.
