The East Somerset Railway has released an update on the overhaul work taking place on steam locomotive 5239 Goliath.

All of the coupling rods have now been machined. This now allows the bearings to be machined to fit and suit.

Boiler work has been progressing well. The crown stays and the doorplate section has been removed. Due to the unusual shape of the Firehole, it isn't easy to determine the state of the steel plate.

Due to this unusual shape, the team decided that it should be replaced just in case of it having damage.

Once the plate was removed, the team were proved with their decision to replace it. A lot of deep pitting and corrosion thinning means that the plate is about half of its original thickness.

The Firehole repair is progressing well.
