Where and when to see a steam locomotive in Carlisle this Tuesday

Steam locomotive 45699 Galatea or 48151 will be back in steam on the mainline and will be in and around Carlisle on Tuesday 4th September 2018.

The locomotive is on a special railtour by Statesman Rail on Tuesday, 4th September 2018. 45699/48151 is hauling The Fellsman. The tour sees the steam locomotive steam through Settle on its way to Carlisle.

The train, hauled by a diesel locomotive, will depart Chester at approximately 08:15 am.

The tour will stop at Frodsham around 08:31 for a 4-minute break, departing at 08:35. The diesel locomotive will then make stops at Warrington Bank Quay (08:49), Wigan North Western (09:11) and Leyland (09:27), Blackburn (09:51) and Clitheroe (10:25) to pick up passengers.

Upon arrival at Hellifield Goods Loop (11:00), either 45699 Galatea or 48151 will be added train for the run up the Settle and Carlisle. Departing Hellifield at 11:56, the locomotive will steam through Ribblehead (12:21) and Garsdale (12:37) before stopping at Appleby at 13:06.

Departing Appleby at 13:28, the locomotive will head through Armathwaite at 13:55 before arriving into Carlisle at 14:17.

On the return trip, the steam locomotive will depart Carlisle at 16:42 before heading via Ribblehead (18:36), Settle (18:49) and Hellifield, where the train will arrive at 19:00. Here, the steam locomotive is detached from the train and is replaced by a diesel for the remainder of the journey.

Departing at 19:55, the diesel locomotive will make the same stops as the outbound train. This is Blackburn (21:15), Leyland (21:43), Wigan North Western (22:02), Warrington Bank Quay (22:31), Frodsham (22:46).

The train will arrive back into Chester (23:06).
