Transport for London has announced that passengers can once again interchange between Bank and Charing Cross at Kennington from today following completion of vital work.
The work has included the excavation of four new customer passageways at Kennington. This has, therefore, meant that Bank branch trains have not been stopping at the station since the end of May.
Following this phase of work, the final fitting of the passageways will continue during planned engineering hours.
The work included:
- Digging out almost 2,000 tonnes of spoil (mostly London Clay) by hand
- Installing timber and steel supports to strengthen the structure.
- Use around 900 tonnes of concrete and 500 tunnel ring segments to create the new structures
Once the work is completed, the four passageways will make it easier for passengers to change between the different lines.
What did the officials say?
Stuart Harvey, TfL's Director of Major Projects, said:
“I'd like to thank customers for their patience while we worked around the clock to construct four new passageways at Kennington. When completed, the passageways will make it easier to interchange at the station. The Northern Line Extension is an essential part of our investment programme which will continue to improve customers' journeys and add vital new capacity to the capital's transport network.”

Except for the Bank Branch of the Northern Line will not stop at Kennington.
Sorry misheard and didn’t read it properly. That’s great news. Glad that passengers can use the Northern Line either via Charing Cross and via Bank. Brilliant news.
