Steam locomotive to visit Shrewsbury – where and when to see it!

Steam locomotive 45699 Galatea will be back in steam on the mainline and will be in and around Shrewsbury on Thursday 13th September 2018.

The locomotive is on a special railtour on Thursday 13th September 2018. 45699 is hauling the Carnforth – Shrewsbury section of the Salopian Express 2 tour. The tour sees the steam locomotive steam through Preston and Wigan on its way to Shrewsbury.

The train will depart Dumfries behind a diesel locomotive at approximately 05:53 am.

The railtour will then leave Dumfries for Shrewsbury where it will call at Annan (06:10), Gretna Green (06:21), Carlisle (07:06), Penrith North Lakes (07:32) before arriving at Carnforth Down & Up Goods Loop at 08:18.

Here, steam locomotive 45699 Galatea will be attached to the train. Departing at 9 am, 45699 will call at Lancaster (09:11) and Preston (09:40) before arriving into Wigan North Western 10:36.

From Wigan, the train will pass through Warrington Bank Quay (10:58), Acton Bridge (11:15) and Winsford (11:26) before arriving into Crewe at 11:40.

Leaving Crewe, 45699 Galatea will head via Nantwich (12:28), Wrenbury (12:32) and Wem before arriving into Shrewsbury at 13:04.

On the return trip, the steam locomotive departs Shrewsbury at 17:10 and will head via Crewe (18:08), Wigan North Western (19:31), Preston (19:56) and Lancaster (21:38) to get back to Carnforth, arriving back at 21:49.

Here, the diesels take over from steam, and will head via Penrith North Lakes (22:51), Carlisle (23:12), Gretna Green (23:35) and Annan (23:47) before arriving into Dumfries at 00:06.
