Steam locomotive in Ribblehead this Thursday – where and when to see it!

A heritage steam train will be crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct once again this Thursday as it makes its way up the Settle and Carlisle line.

The locomotive hasn’t yet been confirmed, however, it will be one of the Carnforth pool of locomotives, this includes 8F 48151, Jubilee 45690 ‘Leander’, Jubilee 45699 ‘Galatea’ or Merchant Navy 35018 ‘British India Line’.

The train, hauled by a diesel locomotive, will depart Wolverhampton at approximately 06:26 am.

The tour will then head via Stafford (stop at 06:45), Stoke-on-Trent (07:35), Kidsgrove (07:47), Alsager (stop at 07:54), Crewe (stop at 08:33), Winsford (08:52) and Acton Bridge (08:57) before arriving into Warrington Bank Quay at 09:09.

From Warrington Bank Quay, the train will head via Wigan North Western (09:33), Leyland (stop at 09:47), Blackburn (10:13), Langho (10:25) and Clitheroe (10:34) before arriving into Hellifield at 10:59.

At Hellifield Goods Loop, one of the steam locomotives listed above (TBC) will be added train for the run up the Settle and Carlisle. Departing Hellifield at 11:55, the locomotive will steam through Ribblehead (12:19) and Garsdale (12:37) before stopping at Appleby at 13:03.

Departing Appleby at 13:28, the locomotive will head through Lazonby & Kirkoswald (13:47) before arriving into Carlisle at 14:12.

On the return trip, the steam locomotive will depart Carlisle at 16:35 before heading via Ribblehead (18:18), Settle Jn (18:43) and Hellifield, where the train will arrive at 18:49. Here, the steam locomotive is detached from the train and is replaced by a diesel for the remainder of the journey.

Departing at 19:42, the diesel locomotive will make the same stops as the outbound train. This is Clitheroe (20:06), Blackburn (20:31), Leyland (20:58), Wigan North Western (additional stop at 21:15), Warrington Bank Quay (21:55), Crewe (22:32), Stoke-on-Trent (22:55) and Stafford (23:22).

The train will arrive back into Wolverhampton (23:51).
