Nottingham railway station fire helpers recognised

East Midlands Trains have announced that themselves, Network Rail and the emergency services across Nottinghamshire have been recognised at a national awards ceremony for their efficient response to the fire at Nottingham station in 2018.

The winning award, Outstanding Teamwork, was presented to , Network Rail, British Transport Police and Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service at the National Rail Awards.

The fire at Nottingham Railway station happened on the 12 January 2018

The teamwork in response to the break out of the fire meant the train services could return to the station the following day.

The full list of partners was East Midlands Trains, Network Rail, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, British Transport Police, Nottinghamshire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Nottingham City Council, and Interserve.

What did the officials say?

Jake Kelly, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, said:

“This is a fantastic achievement and one that really marks just how much can be achieved by working as one team.

“From our front line teams at East Midlands Trains, who played a remarkable role in looking after customers; to the firefighters who tackled the fire; to the British Transport Police who took control of the site with detailed forensic investigations and to all the other partners who played a crucial role in our response to this major incident, this is well deserved recognition of your work during extremely challenging circumstances.

“We remain truly grateful for the hard work and support of everybody involved.”

Bryn Coleman, Area Manager Strategic Support, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“When an incident as serious as the station fire occurs, it is crucial that a coordinated approach is taken to bring about a successful resolution.

“Thanks to the teamwork of all agencies, organisations and partners, our firefighters were able to work quickly to tackle the fire, ensure no one was injured and we were able to keep the public informed.

“We are proud to have been part of a team that were able to respond so effectively when called upon.”

Chief Constable Paul Crowther from British Transport Police, said:

“The work of everyone in the hours and days following the devastating blaze at Nottingham station was exemplary.

“Teams from BTP, the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Trains and Network Rail each worked seamlessly and methodically to quickly tackle the fire and ensure disruption at a key transport hub was kept to a minimum.

“They truly deserve this level of recognition and I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone, your work was exceptional and levels of teamwork was outstanding.”

Andrew Murray, Director of Route Safety and Asset Management for Network Rail said:

“We're delighted that this award has recognised the important teamwork required to get train services returning just 24 hours after this serious fire.

“We are incredibly proud of this achievement and it highlights the best of the railway industry and emergency services working collaboratively to achieve the best result for passengers.

“We'd like to thank station users for their continued patience whilst we carry out final repair work at the station.”
