Northern has released the very first refurbished Class 158 train and is now on the network in passenger service.

Today (20/09/2018) it is operating between Leeds and Lincoln – have you seen it yet?

The newly refurbished trains now have USB sockets, free Wi-Fi as well as new seating and lighting.

Over 100 trains have gone through the first phase of refurbishment, which has included a new livery, new seats and being made fully accessible.

However, this Class 158, No.158845, is the first train to have all of its upgrades complete.

The below image shows the completed new internal seating – I'm sure you will agree, it looks superb!

  • Yet again the ghastly Fainsa “ironing board” seats are used I see to reduce comfort to that of a church pew. At least one operator – Greater Anglia- has seen sense and won’t use them. What happened to the results of the seat survey conducted by Northern? These things were NOT the preferred one by passengers. But they are the cheapest- need we say more!

  • Also Northern have started using some of the Class 170s on the Leeds-Harrogate and York-Harrogate services. With few more to be cascaded from ScotRail which will make a total of 16 Class 170s on Northern and perhaps use some of them on busier services across Yorkshire.
