The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway have announced that steam locomotive No. 1742 Millom will be visiting the line for their Annual Steam Gala.
1742 Millom is the second guest announced for the Annual Steam Gala and joins Taff Vale Railway No. 85 from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway at the event.
The locomotives appearance is thanks to the Quainton Railway Society.
The two locomotives join home locomotives of No.71515 Mech Navvies and 0-4-0ST ‘Rosyth No. 1’ at the event.
A brief history of 1742 Millom
1742 Millom was built by Hudswell Clarke in 1946 for the Ministry of Supply. Upon delivery, it was sent to the West Chirton depot in Northumberland, after two years here it was sent to the WD Proof and Experimental Establishment in Cumberland.
In February 1957, it was decided it was surplus to requirements and sold to the Millom and Askham Haematite and Iron Co Ltd. After delivery here, it was stored until 1963 and given a full overhaul and worked at the Hodbarrow Ironstone Mine. When this closed, the loco returned to Millom, once this had closed, it became surplus to requirements and was sold by the receivers and was bought by a Quainton Railway Society member in which it arrived in 1970.
