Great Western Railway has announced that the first new Intercity Express Trains which are built for Devon and Cornwall entered service on Monday 20 August.
The first train, formed of 802003 and 005, hauled the 0553 Plymouth to London Paddington service.
A second train (802 006 and 007) hauled the 0730 London Paddington to Penzance service.
The following businesses helped support the production of the new trains:
- Floors from Cornwall (TiFlex)
- Pantographs from Somerset (Brecknell Willis)
- Braking systems from Wiltshire (Knorr-Bremse)
What did the officials say?
Great Western Railway Managing Director Mark Hopwood said:
“We know how important the railway is to the economies and communities of the South West and I am delighted to see this first new train for Devon and Cornwall services carry passengers.
“Already delivering significant improvements elsewhere on the GWR network these new trains will, with an improved timetable, enable us to offer a step change in passenger transport.
“The trains will help us provide faster, more frequent services into the South West, each offering up to 24% more seats per train, in greater comfort and with improved on board facilities.”

Grest Western Railway might aswell start saying goodbye to the Class 43 HST’s but to keep few of the Class 43’s.
Next year will see the Class 800’s and Class 801’s replacing the Class 43’s HST and Class 91’s Intercity fleets on the East Coast Main Line with ScotRail having 26 Class 43’s & Mk3 carriages to operate on the Intercity services that will serve the 7 cities in Scotland.
And not forgetting TPE and Hull Trains to start using their Class 802’s from next year. Which TPE have given their Class 802’s a new name called “Nova 2”.
