The Groudle Glen Railway have officially re-named Baguley locomotive, Maltby. Despite the traditional Manx weather, spirits were not dampened for the ceremony.

The railway's Chairman, Trevor Nall, performed a speech welcoming guests and visitors to the line. He highlighted that everyone today focusses on cost-cutting on the island. However, it isn't always like this, there were people with a vision, one such person was former Chairman of Onchan Commissioners, Richard Maltby Broadbent.

Richard Maltby Broadbent created Groudle Glen, panted the trees and built the water wheel, side stalls, walkways and the cliff top zoo, and not forgetting the railway.

This steam outline locomotive now marks his legacy perfectly, this is because until now there was nothing to mark this.

The locomotive was made famous by its appearance in the BBC Sitcom “Hi De Hi”. It was relaunched as ‘Maltby' by Richard Maltby Broadbent's great-grandsons Ricky and Ronnie Broadbent who unveiled the nameplate and cut the commemorative cake.

What did the officials say?

Trevor thanked the organisations and people who supported the volunteers at the railway:

The Alan Chinery Trust, The Scheinberg Family, The Manx Lottery Trust, The Elizabeth Clucas Charitable Trust, The Gough Ritchie Charitable Trust, The Broadbent Family, Culture Vannin, Tower Insurance and the Rotary Club.
