The 1014 The G.W. County Project has released an update on work completed between April and July 2018 on their project to overhaul steam locomotive 1014 County of Glamorgan.

Chassis

The chassis for the locomotive has been re-wheeled and the necessary clearances have been made. The next step is for the springs to be fitted to the locomotive.

Lubricator pots

Dicky Boast has now started work a set of lubricator pots. These are produced from 65 mm steel tubes, turned to 55 mm and then turn down end plugs and finally braized together.

This is part of the locomotive's lubrication system, which can be formed and fitted once the springs are fitted to the steam locomotive.

Motion

Attention by the group has now turned to the motion of the locomotive. The project owns the eccentric sheaves, straps and slide bars for the locomotive, but all of these need refurbishing.

Two crossheads have been obtained by the project, but unfortunately, they are the wrong pattern. This means they will be sold to one of the other projects elsewhere. The correct crossheads will have to be cast, but the cost of this could be covered by the sale of the crossheads that are no longer needed.

Finally, the project needs to raise £45,000 to machine the connecting and coupling rods.

Firebox

1014's firebox is now complete. The new barrel sections will be delivered to HBSS in Chester for completion shortly. A smokebox door has been ordered and design work for the door ring and saddle have begun.

The project hopes to order the parts soon to create the face of the locomotive.

Boiler

Some good news has met the project, the boiler for 1014 will not need to be lowered in order to meet the Network Rail restriction for running on the mainline.

To complete the boiler work, it has been estimated that £125,000 will be funded to complete the necessary work.

The funding will either be completed either through sponsorship or the start of a Boiler Club.

Mainline operation?

Although the boiler doesn't need to be lowered to run on the national network. A reduction in height of the cab (already completed) and a safety valve casing, similar to the one used on King Edward II, will be required.

Unfortunately, the group has decided not to equip 1014 County of Glamorgan with the necessary equipment for mainline running at this stage. However, with it being within the height restriction, it leaves the group an option in the future to fit the equipment.

Tender

Completion of the locomotive's tender is awaiting the fitment of the push rods, which have been acquired by the group recently, and a seal for the vacuum cylinder.

  • Same reasons as 6023, so it can at least be towed in and out of Didcot under the wires !!!!

  • If it is not intended to have 1014 as a main line runner, for the time being, why bother to mess around with the safety valve bonnet proportions ? One of the Hawksworth County’s characteristics is it’s tall standing safety valve bonnet.
