What did the officials say?

Tom Joyner, Managing Director of Arriva Trains Wales said:

“We are delighted to confirm these extra Sunday services between Treherbert and Barry Island as a trial over the summer. This is something we've looked at carefully having been working with Leanne Wood AM to deliver better and more regular services to communities where they are needed most.

“Leanne and her team have worked collaboratively with us and the local community to highlight the demand for this important trial. This trial also follows o from the introduction of additional Sunday Aberdare services earlier this year, which we also delivered following local stakeholder feedback.

“We can be really proud of our work with partners to deliver the best possible service for our communities.”

Leanne Wood AM said:

“This is fantastic news for the Rhondda. On the survey I created there was a clear majority in favour of extra trains on a Sunday.

“Arriva Trains Wales has listened to the people and has reacted positively to the feedback. I am grateful to them for acting so swiftly to introduce extra services between the Rhondda and Cardiff as well as between Cardiff and Barry Island.

“I also want to thank everyone that took the time to take the online survey because without that input there would not have been the evidence to justify the extra services.”

“I hope the additional services are used as much as possible over this summer break so we can make a strong case for their retention at the end of the trial period.”
