What did the officials say?

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at , said:

“This project is a huge investment into the railway in Derby and we would like to remind passengers to check before they travel during the upgrade.

Due to the nature of the improvement, there will be an impact on train services and we'd like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience which this causes. We have worked closely with East Midlands Trains and CrossCountry to keep this to a minimum.

“Once completed, passengers will benefit from a more modern and reliable railway which is fit to meet the needs of the communities and economies which our railway serves.”

Adam Piddington, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Trains, said:

“Derby Resignalling is the biggest investment to Derby station for decades and will improve journeys for the thousands of passengers who travel to, from and through Derby every day. However, while the work is carried out it will mean disruption and changes to journeys for customers.

“We have worked closely with Network Rail and CrossCountry for months to make sure customers are at the heart of our planning and we are pleased to now offer discounted fares and compensation for customers travelling by replacement bus. I would urge customers to pick up a leaflet, or visit our website derby2018.co.uk, and find out more.”

CrossCountry's Managing Director, Andy Cooper, said:

“We understand that disruption to journeys caused while engineering work takes place will be inconvenient. In the long term these works will make a real difference for rail users to, from and through Derby, but while they take place there will undoubtedly be disruption to peoples' regular journeys.

“To help make up for this we have worked closely with Network Rail and East Midlands Trains to develop a package to help both regular and occasional travellers, with discounted fares and compensation for season ticket holders, details of which are available at stations or online.”

Anthony Smith, chief executive of the independent watchdog Transport Focus, said:

“It is good to see East Midlands Trains and CrossCountry proactively offering discounted fares and compensation for passengers travelling by replacement bus. Passengers tell us that when it's a bus rather than a train they expect to pay less.

“Investment in renewing and improving the railway is necessary, and passengers understand that even though it's a pain. Discounted fares and compensation will help sugar the pill and maintain trust between the railway and its customers.”
