The UK's Rail Minister, Jo Johnson, has met with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Northern Rail and Network Rail.

The Rail Minister has welcomed the improvements made by over the last 2 days but says all efforts must continue to reduce disruption and ensure passengers are fairly compensated.

Jo Johnson has also met with passenger and staff representatives to hear their stories and to thank them for the patience given.

Information about compensation will be announced by the industry soon.

The Rail Delivery Group has confirmed that Northern have made improvements. Since the start of the week, 654 trains have run, 83% arriving as planned with 3% of them being cancelled or arriving significantly late.

This is a huge improvement when compared to the first two weeks of the new timetables, where 69% of the trains arrived as planned and 11% of trains were cancelled or significantly delayed.

What did the officials say?

Rail Minister Jo Johnson said:

Northern passengers have experienced totally unacceptable levels of service recently and it is my priority that we put this right as quickly as possible and passengers are properly compensated.

This has been a difficult period for Northern's staff and its customers and I am grateful for the patience passengers have demonstrated, while the staff work tirelessly to put the things right as quickly as possible.
