The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has released a further update to the repair work currently being carried out at the Nene Valley Railway on steam locomotive No.60163 Tornado
The repairs are continuing with pace to get Tornado back in traffic. The re-boring of the valves is now complete and the manufacturing of repairing of the necessary components is now into the advanced stage.
The work on the repairs are undertaken away from the locomotive and then the reassembly work can then follow, the trust is now working towards completing the reassembly.
The current plan is to have 60163 Tornado back in steam week commencing 2nd July, from there, the locomotive can be run in at the Nene Valley Railway, this then will allow a mainline test to take place.
The hope was that Tornado will return to mainline duties on the 10th July 2018 with the RAF 100 train, to ensure that this train runs with steam, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has made arrangements for LNER A4 60009 Union of South Africa to haul this tour instead.
It has unfortunately taken longer than anticipated to manufacture the new crosshead and the risk of Tornado not being available is too great not to make an alternative plan.
