Travel by steam locomotive to the top of Snowdon this Half Term on the Snowdon Mountain Railway

Are you visiting Snowdonia this Half Term? The perfect way to see the biggest mountain in England and Wales is to travel by train.

This is where the Snowdon Mountain Railway comes into its own. With its rack-and-pinion system, a heritage steam locomotive will be able to take you all the way from Llanberis to the top of Mount Snowdon.

The has four steam locomotives, one of which will take you up the 1,085 metres to the top, where you find the sundial summit, cafe and shop.

Alternatively, a diesel locomotive will also be in operation so you can take the train to the top, and walk down, or why not walk to the top and get the train down – your choice!

The journey by train will take you two and a half hours, including 30 minutes at the top for you to explore.

Trains depart Llanberis every day throughout Half Term every 30 minutes from 9am, subject to passenger demand.

A brief history of the Snowdon Mountain Railway

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a narrow gauge railway which runs for 4.7 miles from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon. It opened in 1896 and has been operating for more than 100 years. It is the only rack and pinion railway in the United Kingdom and carries around 130,000 passengers annually.
