The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, who are based at the Midland Railway Centre – Butterley, has posted pictures on their Facebook page showing British Railways (BR) Standard 4 (2-6-4T) No.80080’s boiler being prepared for steam testing.
Tests
The boiler has already passed its hydraulic test, with the boiler now being steamed ready for steam testing. Once pasted, the boiler can then be lifted back into the frame, where further overhaul work can continue.
About 80080
Brighton Works constructed 80080 in March 1954, along with another 129 engines of the Standard 4 Tank Class. The London area was the first home for 80080, where the tank worked daily commuter services into Fenchurch Street Station. Electrification led to the locomotive moving to North and Central Wales, where 80080’s final years of BR ownership were spent.
Rescued from Barry Scrapyard in November 1980, restoration was completed at the Midland Railway – Butterley in October 1987. On the tank’s first boiler ticket both mainline and heritage work was done, running the best part of 40,000 miles on this ticket.
