Network Rail has announced that it will be undertaking upgrade works at Ealing Broadway station over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

Their engineers will be out in force from 5th to the 7th May 2018 as they remove the stairway on Platform 2/3. This removal will allow to continue work on the foundations for the new passenger footbridge and lifts that will connect platforms to a larger ticket hall once the work is complete.

A temporary staircase to the platform will be installed once the current one is removed. The staged plan for Ealing Broadway allows the station to remain open throughout the ongoing work, this reduces passenger disruption by making use of Bank Holidays when 50% fewer passengers travel.

A limited service will operate at Ealing Broadway on Saturday the 5th and Monday the 7th May 2018. No services will operate on Sunday 6th May, with buses replacing trains.

A 500-tonne crane will be used, and temporary road closures will be in operation to allow the work to be completed.

These closures include the north-south part of the Broadway outside the station from 11 pm on Friday 4 May to 5 am on Tuesday 8 May. Pedestrian access to businesses and properties along The Broadway will be unaffected.

Network Rail will be holding a community drop-in session at the Crossrail Office on Haven Green, W5 2TN on Monday 30 April from 4.30pm to 7 pm.

What did the officials say?

Ben Wheeldon, Crossrail programme director for Network Rail, said:

“This station upgrade forms a vital part of our upgrade programme for the Elizabeth line and will allow us to work on the foundations for a new footbridge and lifts that will improve access to the station and connectivity to a new larger ticket hall.

“The scale of the work is huge and we will work round the clock to ensure the work is completed on time as we continue to deliver our Railway Upgrade Plan.

“We thank everyone affected by the upgrade work for their patience and advise anyone travelling to or near the station to check before they travel.”

  • Not only Ealing Broadway getting the upgrades. Hanwell railway station also in West London is undergoing upgrades and refurbishment as part of the Crossrail project. Which may include extension of the platforms, new ticket kiosks, new ticket barriers, replacing stairs and installing new lifts or ramps to make Hanwell step free accessible once the Crossrail works have been completed and the start of the Elizabeth Line that will operate from East to West through Central London from late this year.

    • West Ealing has been upgraded with a new platform being built for trains operating on the West Ealing-Greenford branch line which could be taken over by Chiltern Railways or London Overground from next year.
