West Coast Railways Company has announced that a Colas Railfreight Class 70 diesel locomotive will haul the ‘Scarborough Spa Express' in June 2018.
The Scarborough Spa Express departing Carnforth on the 7th June will feature this special locomotive, which is normally only used on freight services.
The Class 70 will take the tour down the West Coast Mainline from Carnforth to Preston, the tour will then divert east towards York via Burnley Manchester Road, Hebden Bridge, and Leeds.
At York, the tour will be taken over by a steam locomotive (TBC), which will take the train onto Scarborough and return to York, where the Class 70 will take the train back to Carnforth via Preston.
A brief history of class 70 diesel locomotives
The class 70 is a six-axle Co-Co locomotive manufactured by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. They were built between 2008 and 2017 with orders in 2007 for 20 with an option of 10 more. They are widely seen hauling long freight trains around the UK.
