A life-saving defibrillator, which was stolen from Bridgend Railway Station, has been replaced after a generous donation from the Welsh Hearts charity.

We reported on the theft last month and caused outrage among staff and the local community, particularly, as it had been used to save the life of local man, Leighton Williams.

Last year, Leighton Williams from Ogmore Vale had been into Graham Paul accountants. Unfortunately, he was taken ill with a cardiac arrest. After a 999 call, staff was told to run to the railway station to grab the defibrillator. Luckily, Mr. Williams made a full recovery due to having the defib on hand.

At a special presentation, Sharon Owen gifted the new defibrillator to Arriva Trains Wales so it can be ready for action if an emergency arises.

What did the officials say?

Sharon said, “We're a small charity in Wales and we really wanted to help”.

“It was heartbreaking to hear about the theft and people don't realise just how important this equipment is and whoever stole it should think about how it might have been needed one day to save someone close to them, so we're really pleased to present this to Bridgend Station.”

Mr. Williams said “If it hadn't been for the defibrillator I'd be dead”

“That's why I was so devastated to hear it had been stolen. We've been raising money at Ogmore Vale Rugby Club and will be delighted to give it to Welsh Hearts for their generous donation.”

Customer Services Director for Arriva Trains Wales Bethan Jelfs said: “These defibrillators are a real community asset and we are delighted to work with Welsh Hearts and hope to do so closer in the future. Thankful it was able to help save Leighton's life and it's brilliant that it's been replaced so is here if it's ever needed again.”

Bridgend MP Madeline Moon said: “This isn't about a defibrillator being taken from Bridgend station, it's about the theft from a community.

“The amazing gesture by Welsh Hearts will benefit not just those using the station but every home and business in the surrounding area who might need to access it to save a life.”
