Train operating company, Arriva Trains Wales, has seen its Cardiff Central railway station staff swap trains for trainers to try and raise £1,500 for charity.

The Wales on Wheels static bike challenge saw staff of the TOC cycle for 15-minute intervals on the concourse of Cardiff Central Station.

More than 45 members of staff took part with a combined total of 342 miles clocked up between them.

In addition to the cycling, staff also held a bake sale to boost the donations. A total of £768 was raised, with Arriva Trains Wales matching the public donation to make a total of £1536 to Breast Cancer Care.

The furthest distance cycled was by train driver Simon Hobby who travelled an impressive 6.67 miles in just 15 minutes.

What did the officials say?

Emily Harris of Arriva Trains Wales, who organised the event, said: “It was brilliant to see so many of our colleagues willing to get involved. Cycling for 15 minutes on a static bike really isn't as easy as it sounds and we put in some good miles for a really worthy cause. A huge thank you to all those who took part and all those who donated.”

Rachael Power of Breast Cancer Care said: “We're so pleased that Arriva Trains Wales chose to take part in Breast Cancer Care Cymru's brand new fundraising initiative Wales on Wheels. I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone for participating and donating. The money raised will help Breast Cancer Care Cymru be there for more people affected by breast cancer, whenever they need them.”
