TransPennine Express has announced that they have installed 15 new ticket gates at Manchester Airport railway station.

Two sets of ticket gates have been installed. One at the platform level between the tram and train platforms, and one at the station booking office level.

11 of the 15 gates are a wide aisle to accommodate people coming through with large items of luggage.

has invested £600,000 into the new gates. This is part of a £3.7 million project to install ticket gates across the TPE network.

New gates will go live at Dewsbury at the end of January, and Manchester Piccadilly in March.

The gates have been provided by Cubic Transport Solutions. They are now live and accept all current ticket types. They also have the potential to provide a contactless payment option in the future.

The platform level gates are remotely monitored. Any problems customers are facing, they can press a button and speak to a member of staff. The gates feature a camera so they can show the ticket and then the member of staff can buzz them through.

What did the officials say?

Ian Humphreys, Head of Retail Strategy, said: “The installation of the ticket gates is a significant investment which will go a long way to make things fairer for our customers. The vast majority of people pay for their journeys and are rightly frustrated when they see others getting a free ride. These ticket gates will go a long way to put an end to that, as well as adding further security to the station.”
