Icons of Steam have released news on the work BR Standard 7 No. 70000 “Britannia” has undergone.

In 2015, due to vibration problems whilst operating mainline tours, Icons of Steam decided to withdraw 70000 from traffic and undertake repair work at LNWR Heritage in Crewe.

After 45231 “The Sherwood Forester” had undergone all necessary work, more attention could be turned towards repairing Britannia.

Work has mainly concentrated on the ‘bottom-end’ of the engine, this includes the axleboxes, frame, reversing and valve gear, springs and bogie.

All 3 sets of tender wheels and the trailing truck wheelset have been fitted with new roller bearings.

When can we expect to see 70000 Britannia back in steam?

Icons of Steam hope to get 70000 back into traffic to haul some of their new mainline tours. Which are promoted by Saphos Trains, but this will be confirmed at a later date.
