Restoration Progress on Andrew Barclay No. 2352

Andrew Barclay No.2352 is soon to start restoration at the Tanat Valley Light Railway (TVLR).

This comes after a new owner bought the locomotive earlier this year. After moving to the TVLR, work on overhauling the engine should now commence.

Work should start next year on Cleaning up metal to assess work required; overhauling Pistons; patching a hole and repair a thin area on the Tank, repair the Brake Weight Shaft and reattach the Braking Rig.

More major work to be carried out shortly is the Re-Boring of the Cylinders in 2352. This work will be carried by Bryn Engineering, along with a few other tasks. The locomotive will also need a new boiler if it is to steam again. Its original boiler was cut up long ago, but a few parts for a boiler did come with the locomotive when it was purchased. The new owner has acquired all the drawings necessary to build a new boiler from scratch, but other options are being explored as well.

In March 2018, it is planned to have a week spent working on the loco. On the todo list is: fitting Braking Rig; repairing Cab area to allow visitors to stand on the footplate and painting the Chassis and Wheels black. This working week starts on March 5th.

2352's History

2352 was built in 1954 by Andrew Barclay Sons and Co, 2352 being its Construction number. Shortly after being built, the loco was transferred to CEGB Goldington, where renumbered ED9, would carry out shunting duties around the Power Station with ED10 (2354 “Richard Trevithick”).

Eventually, after being separated with the closure of the Power Station, the two were reunited when 2352 was brought in the early 2000s as spares for 2354. Since then, 2354 has been operational, while 2352 was stored at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway.

As well as being numbered as ED9, 2352 also has carried the number and name No. 67 “Hong Kong Flyer”.
