North Wales Railway Stations Win ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ Awards

Two Railway Stations in North Wales have been commended for their condition in the recent ‘Keep Wales Tidy' awards.

Prestatyn won Wales' Best Kept Staffed Station in the awards. Whilst Chirk won Wales' Best Kept Unstaffed Station Award.

Volunteers who work closely with Arriva Trains Wales were congratulated for their efforts at the award ceremony in Cardiff Bay.

Prestatyn was up against competition from Aberystwyth, Machynlleth, and Llandudno. Whilst Chirk beat competition from Borth and Caersws to the award.

Keep Wales Tidy is the charity working across Wales to protect the environment for now and for the future.

What did the officials say?
Sherry Edwards

Sherry Edwards represented the 16 strong team of volunteers from the Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station group. She described them as “delighted and honored” to have won the award.

She said “Our sixteen strong teamwork hard throughout the year, litter picking, tending the plants and selecting displays each spring and autumn which will give year-round color. We are most grateful for the huge support and encouragement we receive from Arriva staff, our sponsors, Prestatyn Town Council and Denbighshire County Council. This is a great team effort and we would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”

Christine Ashford

Christine Ashford, said the Friends of Chirk Station were “delighted” to bring the award home to the town after a “successful year” for the volunteers.

She said “We were delighted to continue our sponsorship of the Tidy Wales Awards,” she said. We echo our thanks to Geraint Morgan at for all the help and support he has given to all stations in Wales, whether manned or unmanned. A very special thanks to Keep Wales Tidy (and Wales in Bloom) for continuing to recognise and reward the excellent community work that is being achieved by dedicated teams of volunteers throughout Wales.”

Geraint Morgan

Community Relations Manager Geraint Morgan leads the projects across Wales. He said: “Encouraging responsible disposal of litter at stations helps present a positive first impression for customers while ensuring that as much waste as possible can be recycled to protect the environment. Both Prestatyn and Chirk have a long history of helping to maintain wonderful floral displays at their stations and their recognition at today's awards is very well deserved.”

Lesley Jones, Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, said: “The Tidy Wales Awards celebrates people of all ages taking part in a wide range of green initiatives, all with the common goal of making Wales a better and tidier place. They are an inspiration and a great example in their community. We would like to thank them for their hard work as well as thanking our sponsors for their support with this year's awards.”
