The Jubilee Boiler has undergone an overhaul at Tyseley Locomotive Works, passed its Steam Testing on December 21st.

This is good news for the Bahamas Locomotive Society. This is because it increases the chances of seeing 45596 returning to steam in 2018.

The Rolling Chassis is in the final stages of a Bottom-End overhaul. The tender complete bar a final coat of paint.

Majority of the overhaul has taken place at Tyseley, with smaller tasks undertaken at the Society which is based at Ingrow West on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

Bahamas is an unique member of the Jubilee class, as it was the only member to receive a Double Chimney and Blastpipe.

This modification was installed very later in the engine's life, in May 1961.

British Railways wanted to improve the classes' performance, the trial with Bahamas proved successful, but by the early 60s, steam was starting to be phased out, meaning 45596 was the only member fitted with this equipment.

It will be good to see this steam locomotive back in steam soon

  • My son informs me that if was by no means the only Jubilee with a double chimney. Canada was one of the first to be somfitted, but it didn’t,t last very long before it reverted to single chimney again. Several others had them at times. See http://www.jubilees.co.uk, which is his website and gives the history of each loco, although he hasn’t updated it for som time.
