Volunteers from the Women's Institute of Bordorgan are celebrating since they adopted Arriva Trains Wales Bordorgan railway station on Anglesey.

The six volunteers have planted floral displays and worked to improve the station gardens.

The improved appearance of the station has received fantastic feedback from local residents.

Bordorgan was the previous home to the Duke and Duchess and Cambridge and is popular with tourists every year.

The group is just one of many voluntary groups looking after local stations on the network. This is part of Arriva's ‘Adopt a Station' scheme which launched in 2004. Over 130 stations have already been adopted by volunteers across Wales.

What did the officials say?
Kathleen Beard

Kathleen Beard, Treasurer of the Bodorgan Women's Institute and one of the station volunteers, said: “We adopted the station because we thought it would be a really fulfilling activity for our group. So far, we've painted plant containers along Bodorgan station, including a wheelbarrow, tub, butter churn and metal chest in an effort to brighten up the appearance of the station. The plants used to fill the containers were carefully chosen to attract more flying insects and wildlife to the station, as well as adding some much-needed color to the area.”

She added “We've thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the ‘Adopt a Station' scheme so far and hope to continue the good work that brings so much joy to those passing through the station. Eventually, we are hoping to include a mosaic plaque within the station, celebrating the work that we are doing as part of Arriva's network.”

Geraint Morgan

Arriva's Community Relations Manager, Geraint Morgan, said: “Arriva serves the local communities, so it's important for us to make as many connections as possible so we can help travelling by train a more positive experience for our travellers. Station adopters are really important to us because they will help the stations that have less or no staff and bring positivity to the travelers that use the network with the good work that they do. The station adopters at Bodorgan are a great example of volunteers who've worked hard and lovingly cared for the station and it's made such a difference.

He added “In the last year, the volunteers at Bodorgan have not only made the station much more visibly appealing but have also positively impact the environment by choosing plants that attract wildlife. It's a really vital job and we are very grateful to all the volunteers across our network who make the charitable effort on behalf of their local community to help keep their stations at their best.”
